BLOG 3: THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR

The British were considered to be the strongest power in the world in the 1700's politically, economically and militarily.  Their professional army and navy were the biggest and best trained in the world.  It was said that the "sun never set on the British Empire" because it stretched around the world.

The Colonial Army was a bunch of farmers who were learning "on the job" how to be soldiers with very little supplies and knowledge of how to fight a war.

If this doesn't seem like a fair fight on paper then you are right!

Why do you think the colonists were willing to risk everything by revolting against the British if it didn't look like there was a chance they would win?  What do you think?

I think the colonists were willing to risk everything because they wanted independence more than anything. Some people (like the colonists) did anything and everything for things they believe in. Even though there wasn't a good chance they were going to win this war, they decided to take a risk and fight for their rights. It’s similar to what happens later on in history, when black people and other minorities fight for equal rights. –Victoria Y, Period 3

I believe that the colonists were willing because they wanted it bad enough and were so motivated for freedom from their king that they knew they had to win this war. I don't think that they expected that they would win but, I think that they all knew that they would all give it their best for sure. They knew what the British had because they had come from England so they were aware of what they were capable of. This probably was not good for the colonists because they were just your average people farmers, husbands, business men. They were not soldiers or trained killers like their opponents in the Revolutionary War. The colonists knew that they had to do what it took to overthrow the British and somehow they managed to and I believe that that was good enough for them.

I think that the colonists were willing to risk everything because they felt that there was a lot of taxes. Also the colonists wanted independence and didn't want to be under British rule because they felt since they were living so far away from them that they were there own country and they didn't want to live under British rule they wanted their own rules.

I think the colonists were willing to risk everything because they had hope. The British were not being good to them in their eyes and they wanted to do something about it. They wanted things to change so they went to war. The fight may have not been fair but they were willing to fight to the death for what they wanted and believed in. This is why I think they revolted because I think they had hope.

I think that the colonists were willing to risk everything by revolting against the British, even if it didn't look like there was a chance they would win, because they truly believed in themselves and their own rights of freedom. I believe that the colonists knew they barely had a chance, but they really wanted to leave an important mark in history and maybe cause others to rise up against the British and one day come to an agreement of freedom for all.

I think the colonists were willing to risk everything because the king was very unfair to them. They wanted freedom and would do anything for it. I think that they wanted to make their own rules and not be bossed around by some guy half way around the world. I wouldn't find that fair and neither did them.

I think the reason the colonists fought so hard because all they wanted at that point in was freedom and to become their own independent country. I think even though they knew they probably couldn't win they still wanted to show they they would fight for what they believe in even if it means death or the loss of their colonies to the British

I don't think the colonists were willing because if they lost, they will lose everything they had. Some of the things they may have lost was their land, their crops, which would have lead to starvation, and most importantly their homes/shelter. Also if they were willing to risk everything, we wouldn't have had America today.

The colonist wanted to protect their families and support their mother county, also even though they had very little supplies they could have had the courage and confidence to try and fight back. Although the British colony was bigger, better, and a lot stronger doesn't mean that the colonial army couldn't try and fight.

The colonists were willing to lose everything by revolting against the British because they were being treated unfairly so they were determined that freedom from the British, considering the high taxes they needed to pay without being represented in the British Parliament. The colonist could have also had a problem with shipping raw materials over to Great Britain. The only way to get independence would be to go to war with the them, even though they lacked the supplies and knowledge. The colonists were committed and they could have thought that they could form alliances with the French and Spanish.

I think that the colonies decided to risk everything, and even possibly die because they did not want to have to follow all of Britain's rules or have to pay taxes for them, they wanted to be able to live in the colonies independently and for free. If I was in the colonies I would do the same.

The Colonial Army were willing to risk everything by revolting against the British because they did not want to keep paying taxes for Britain. They wanted to live freely so they took the risk of fighting and loosing some of their own to fight for their independence. I think the colonists were willing to risk everything to gain freedom because they really wanted it. The colonists started making colonies to be independent from the king. I don't think this was a fair fight because the British army was an army of trained soldiers who fought hard and had a lot of experience. The Colonial army was an army men who were last-minute put into battle. They had no preparation, experience in actual battles, and no real guess on what it was like to be a soldier in battle. The colonists were probably willing to risk everything to fight against the British because they clearly believed in what they were fighting for, otherwise, they wouldn't put themselves out on the line against a highly trained and experienced team. I think the colonists, win or lose, wanted to prove to the British that even though they had close to nothing, they wouldn't take being treated unfairly for a lifestyle.

I think the colonists revolted against the British even though it looked like they wouldn't win because they weren't happy with what the British were doing, making them pay taxes, doing what the British wanted them to do. I think that the colonists were willing to take a risk because they knew that they had to express their displeasure with the way the British were treating them. Even if they didn't win they still got their point across and stood up to this injustice. I believe that this achievement holds as much importance as an act such as winning the war. In my opinion, the effort that was put into the attempt to stop the king from raising taxis is all that matters. Win or lose they achieved their desires.

The colonist revolted because they were tired of paying something that the British brought them into. Also the Americans did not get a fair share of land for risking everything but either way it would have risked everything. I think that the colonists were getting very mad by the recent actions of the British towards them, such as making taxes so high while not even letting them have a say in government, the stamp act, and the Boston Massacre, to name a few, and this could have led to their decision to revolt against the British. I think that the colonists believed that they were smarter than the British, although certainly not as big, and that they also had the advantage since the British would have to come to their territory and fight them.

I believe that the colonists were willing to risk everything by revolting against the British even if it didn't look like they were going to win because the colonists weren't happy about what the British king was doing. The British king was making them pay money for the war they just went through and the colonist did not have to go through that before they fought the war. Also another reason they wanted to fight against the British King was because the King was not allowing them to go to the others parts of the New World that they fought for. Lastly the king was making them pay for mail and they did not have to go through that before. I believe the colonist did the right thing and went to war with the King because what the king was doing the the colonist was wrong.

Because they knew that not trying to do any thing would give them a smaller chance of winning their independence from Britain. They also risk their lives even though they were out matched because they did not want to pay Britain's harsh taxes. I think that the colonists were willing to fight despite the odds because they worked hard to settle on this land, and now they own it, not the British back home. They wouldn't want to be ruled by someone who is across the ocean and not even have a say in stuff like taxes and laws. The most important thing to me is the desperation. The British knew they had the numbers and skills, but they had so much more land that they wouldn't want America nearly as bad as the colonists. The colonists knew that this was their land, and they weren't going to be told what to do. The British were fine with having a king. The people here were not. To sum it up, the colonists were so desperate for independence, they were willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what.

It was taxed at 6 cents for the cup, tea and the suger. The British taxed everything because they were in a tax debt because of the French and Indian war and they wanted them to pay back for all the weapons they used by taxing everything. They also wanted to fight back for independence and have "no taxation without representation" which caused the stamp act. They lowers the tax amout for tea from a 6 to a 3. But, that still wasn't enough for them they came to this country to get away from the British and learn their own religion and do what they want.

I think they wanted to risk it all because they didn’t want to be ruled by people across the sea who would not even think about doing the things the settlers had to do. I think if the British were caught off guard the colony might have a chance to win the war because it’s like a boat if a sailor is on a big canoe and does not think the waves will tip it than the sailor will relax and if a bigger wave, the colonists, were to hit the boat at the right angle it could potentially flip the boat dumping the sailor overboard. So the sailor, England, would have little time to react and if the currant, the rebellion, is fast enough pull the canoe, America, out of the sailors reach.

There are a few reasons the Colonial army were able to hang around in this war. One of the reasons is because they had the Indians on their side. The natives worked with the Colonial army and thought them a strategic fighting technique using camo, hiding, short ambushes, hit and run, and killing little by little. This was very different from the British, where they stood out in the open with their red coats and fancy guns to try to take down large numbers at a time.
