BLOG 5: WHY DID THE AMERICANS WIN?

Many historians debate whether Great Britain actually "lost" the American Revolutionary War for Independence, or just "gave up".  These historians point to the fact that the British citizens became tired of fighting a war over a 1000 miles away.  Plus, the British Government felt that the war became to costly, in terms of money and dead/ wounded soldiers.

1.) Using page 194 in your textbook, What were the reasons that  helped the Americans win the American Revolutionary War?  Explain the connection to each of your reasons in your response.

2.)  Has there ever been a war in America's history where we also "gave up" like some say the British did during the American Revolutionary War?  Do a little research and see if you can make a connection.

1. The reason why the Americans won the Revolutionary War is because they had help from the French military.

2. Through the research I've done I could not find a war that the Americans have just "gave up" on.

1.One reason the Americans were winning the revolutionary war was because Samuel Adams warned everyone about unpopular acts that Britain tried to enforce. They knew when they would need to speak out and fight if Britain wanted to.
2.I don't know if we have ever given up a war. I couldn't find anything about it but under certain circumstances we might have had to or thought about it.

I think the colonists won because of their advantages with the land. Like the textbook said, the colonists knew the swamps and forests, whereas the British were used to open fields. This kind of happened during the Vietnam War because American soldiers didn't really want to fight and just wanted to go home. Victoria Yencik, Period 3

1. One reason why the Americans won was because they had skilled leaders such as George Washington who never gave up even when times were difficult. If he gave up they would not have as much knowledge and the good leadership he had to get them through the war. Another reason why was because of the alliance the Americans made with the French. When the Americans lacked the leadership they needed, the French stepped in and helped them out. Without the French the Americans would have fallen apart and would most likely have lost the war. Two more reasons is because of patriotism and because of how well the Americans knew their home ground. This helped the Americans win the war because leaders like Adams and Jefferson kept the soldiers aware and organized so that had a better chance for winning. Also since the Americans knew the ground so well it would be easier to track down their enemies.

2. A war that's like the Revolutionary War is the War of 1812. This relates because Great Britain lost again but in the end they made the Treaty of Ghent which put peace between Great Britain and the United States.

The Americans won the war because they were on their own turf. They knew the terrain of the land. The British often fought in groups which could have made it easier for them to ambush them. Also, help from the French military played a key factor. Money from Spain and the Netherlands was also crucial. A war that we gave up on like the British gave up was Vietnam.

Another thing that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War was financial help from countries like Spain and the Netherlands. There has been a war that America has given up on like the British did in the Revolutionary War. The war that we gave up on was Vietnam. A connection you can make is that the Revolutionary War was getting to expensive to keep fighting much like the Vietnam War was for America. The war in Vietnam resulted in the deaths of too many soldiers just like for England in the Revolutionary War.

Some reasons that helped the American win the revolutionary war were that the Americans gain more supporters as they fought. In the southern colonies they had some secret supporters that showed support once the colonist got to the Southern colonies. In my research I found that the United States of America hasn't given up in any wars.

There were several reasons why the Americans won the Revolutionary War for instance they had patriotic spirit, skilled leadership, help from abroad, and knew geographic advantages. The got help from abroad which made them very successful because they provided leadership and support and also George Washington had a big part in this war because he never gave up and kept fighting and after it he was known as the new Nations hero. A war is the US and Mexican war which was 1846-1848.

The reason why the Americans won the American Revolutionary war because one of the reasons why is that the British soldiers gave up and did not fight to the end. Also if the French never helped the 13 colonies then the Americans might not have won the war. I got this information from the history book. There has been one war that the Americans " gave up" that is the Vietnam war

1. Some reasons that the Americans won the American Revolutionary War were there patriotic spirit, geography [they were on their home land,] skilled leadership, and help from abroad. They got help from the French. Patriotic spirit helped the Americans because they had the fight to persevere because they wanted their freedom so badly. Without their spirit, they probably wouldn't have one. Since they were on their home land, they knew of all the forests and how to navigate them. This gave the Americans an advantage. Skilled leadership helped the Americans because their leaders helped the soldiers to attack at the right times and retreat at the right times. Also, the French had big connection with the war because they gave the Americans lots of help.
2. There has been a war when we had given up. That was the Vietnam War. We had a tough time defeating them and we were going to lose so we just gave up and left. Americans like to refer to this war as a "tie."

1.) The reason that helped the Americans win the American Revolutionary War is that the French military helped. This is a main contribution because they needed support, along with money. Another important reason that helped the Americans win the American Revolution is the Americans' patriotism, this helped them because they never backed down and always kept believing in themselves to create a new nation. The last main important contribution to the Americans winning the war is that they knew their way around while the British knew nothing about the colonies geography. Many American were on their home ground, they knew how to navigate forests, hills, and swamps, unlike the British who relied on supplies that reached out to across the Atlantic.

2.) Some believe that the US gave up on the Spanish-American war because they were tired of three years of fighting the Cuban revolutionaries to gain independence from the Spanish colonial rule. President McKinley asked the congress to end the fighting in Cuba and to establish a more stable government that would maintain order and keep the peace, which the congress accepted.

1. Many Factors contributed r=to the american victory. They fell into four different factors, geographic advantages, help from abroad, patriotic spirit, and skilled leadership.
2. Their was a war that the Americans gave up on, it was called, The American Indian War. The British were taking over areas, and the Americans were confused, so they retreated.

The way the Americans won the war is patriotic spirit they believed as a nation they should believe that they can survive with an Army. Another way is very skilled leadership captains that never gave up for anything. The war the Americans gave up on was Vietnam because the Vietminese knew how to fight in the jungle compared to us it was a first.

America's victory resulted in the making of the Declaration Of Independents. As well as the passing of many other laws to the neighboring countries such as Latin America. They won the Revolutionary War primarily because, The Battle Of Saratoga proved that despite our country's weakness and low-preparedness in terms of battle strategy they still came on strong. We also have to evaluate the psychological aspect of their winning. It is clear that their strength and determination to fight for their rights was undoubtly a factor. This, helped carry them through the toughest time in history.

However, their are some instances where one army will surrender. For example the British took control of France which led to long and vigorous conflict. Due to the fact that the French turned down the fight. Alike the French and Indian war we all have times were we feel like giving up. We may believe we cannot think of a positive outcome. Or, simply lack the effort that it takes to conquer an obstacle. In conclusion, It is now clear that war soldiers and commoners do relate to each other in some way.

The colonists know the land better and had all the supplies they needed right around them. another reason is spirit, a lot of the colonists were supportive and volunteered themselves to help try and win the war together. In addition they had good leadership. George Washington never gave up on everyone and had courage and lots of knowledge. Lastly the colonies had help, the French came over and helped them fight in the was and Spain, as well as other countries, help financially support the Americans.

We were recently in the Vietnam War. During this we did end up "giving up" because North Vietnam was willing to sacrifice way more military men and women then the US was so we withdrew ourselves from the war.

The reasons why the Americans won the Revolutionary War is that the Americans kept going at it, battle after battle after battle. This lead to high expenses of sending the soldiers back and forth to England and America. according to America's history, America wasn't really known to just give up

1) The Americans won the war because they were fighting on their homeland. They knew their way around the woods, forests, swamps, and hills. They also had the spirit and believed that they could win. George Washington never gave up on his nation, and he led them to a fearless victory. The Americans also had help from the French military, and that probably helped them an incredible amount.

2) In the Vietnam War, we thought that it was becoming too expensive, and they didn't know if they should continue to fight or not.

One of the reasons that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War was their geographic advantages. The Americans geographic advantage was that this was their home land. "They knew the forests, hills, and swamps. But British forces were far from their home country," (194, America History of Our Nation). This gave the Americans an advantage as the British then had to navigate their way through open paths to find the different settlements in the colonies. This result meant the colonists would know where they were and could surround them with their militia; or minutemen. Another one of the reasons that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War was patriotic spirit. From patriotic spirit it many was the fact that the colonists cared so much about their independence they were not afraid to make personal sacrifices and die for their liberty. The Americans, being so driven to accomplish their goal of freedom, went to far lengths to win and were very aggressive in battle. The third reason that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War was their help from abroad. What this meant was that other countries were helping as well. "... French military help ... provided needed leadership and support ... money from such countries as Spain and the Netherlands was also crucial," (194, America History of Our Nation). Forming alliances with the other countries they had previously fought with prior to the America Revolution brought much needed resources which was a big help to win the actual war. The last reason that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War was the skilled leadership. "... George Washington ... faced sharp criticism in Congress, his courage and knowledge won him broad support in the army ... nation's most admired hero," (194, America History of Our Nation). Washington's bravery to have the role of a leader within this American Revolution and taking a stance in his own way really expressed his courage, as he didn't fight how they did back in Europe, but as he believed would get their point across, the American way.

I've tried researching a war that America has given up on and can't seem to find one that would make a connection. However, I'm not positive on the Vietnam War as, although I'm positive we had lost, people argue that we were tied so America doesn't have to admit to defeat, which also could have resulted in us giving up. Besides this, I couldn't find and war to even question about whether America had given up or not.

1) The reasons that helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War is:
-They knew their geography a lot better than the British did aiding them in geographical knowledge during battles.
-Their patriotic spirit for creating a new nation carried them through the toughest times.
-If they did not have leaders full of such courage as they were then then they might not have won.
-The help from the French in defeating Britain aided them greatly in supplies, weapons, etc.
If the Americans did not have one of these advantages then it could have changed the outcome of the Revolutionary War.
2) In the Civil War which was actually Americans against Americans one of the sides surrendered or "gave up". The Civil War was about the Confederacy fighting for slavery while the Union was not. After so much blood shed in that point of the war the Confederate leader Robert Lee surrendered because he was outnumbered by the Union and saw no hope in continuing the war.

I believe the the 13 colonies won the American revolution because the had the home field advantage they were able to surprise the British from the woods and other vantage points. Another big part in winning the war was the French, they sent troops and ships to fight the British. Also towards the end of the war the British were not interested in fighting any longer. America gave up on the Iraq war due to some of the same reasons the British gave up on the revolutionary war. People got tired of financing the war, so far away, to many dead solders, and people did not support the war.

One of the reasons why we won the American Revolutionary War was because we weren't like like the British and actually had a desire and a determination to win a be victorious, while the British had no fire inside of them and no strong desire to win the war. Another reason, is The Battle of Saratoga because we became allies with France and France helped us and aided up through out the whole war.

2. A war that we kind of gave up in like the British did, was the Vietnam. Vietnam wasn't a successful war for us. It was basically a tie. When Lyndon B. One of the reasons the Americans won the American Revolutionary war is because they knew their way around their territory so they could navigate through the forests and swamps. While the British had to rely on supply lines to find their way, this gave the Americans that home field advantage because they knew the area well which could lead to ambushes and striking the British when they expected it the least. Also the Americans had great patriotic spirit. This helped them in war because they were so determined and soldiers would fight for years which was a sacrifice. Not to mention, many leaders risked their lives to support the cause. The Americans had assistance from other countries too. The French military was crucial part to their success, they provided the leadership and support necessary to win. Spain and the Netherlands gave money that also aided the Americans. Lastly, George Washington, who never gave up and used his skill and knowledge to the lead the Americans was very important to their victory. Another war where the other country just ‘gave up’ was the Spanish American War of 1898, where the Spanish ceased and both countries signed the third Treaty of Paris, which gave independence to Cuba, and forced the Spanish to give Guam and Puerto Rico to the Americans.

Some things that may have helped the Americans win against the British in the Revolutionary War would be the strong leaders, like Washington and Jefferson, along with the sacrifices they made as big as their lives which inspired others to fight. Also, the French Army helped, plus the Spanish and Netherlands donated money. Finally, the Americans had resources right in their homeland while the British had to get their supplies from across the ocean. The Americans had the advantage of also knowing the land they live on.

2) The Vietnam war was a war where the American's gave up. Many of the Americans wanted the soldiers to be brought home because they weren't gaining anything over in Vietnam though many soldiers were losing their lives in the war.

1)- I think that the Americans won the war for many reasons. When it comes down to it, there are four main reasons; the skilled leadership from George Washington, outside help from the French troops, as well as an income from Spain and the Netherlands. Another reason is that the Americans were extremely patriotic and even when times were hard, the would still push through. Lastly, the geography and the fact that the battle was fought on America's home soil was a huge factor in strategy and planning, and greatly affected the outcome of the war.

2)- I think a war that America sort of gave up on was the Vietnam War. I was this because we went in, sacrificed a lot of troops and money, then came out with very little to show for it. I think it is similar to how the British tried to take back the colonies, but received so much pressure from its citizens, that they just gave up and pulled out.
