BLOG 10: STUDENTS' BILL OF RIGHTS

If we were to create a bill of rights for Jockey Hollow what would it say? Come up with 10 rights that you feel students should have here at school (Be serious with your answers).

Write each right in the form of a statement and explain your reasoning behind each one.

The first right would be if you need a nap take it. School starts early and people often get tired. You could make up the work at another time. The second right would be freedom to use the bathroom whenever. Sometimes you have to go and teachers don't let you. The third right would be no homework. If you can do the work in school then there is no need to do it at home. The 4th right would be snack at anytime. Sometimes you get hungry and can't wait till lunch. The 5th right would be no assigned seats on the buses. I think people are mature enough to pick their own seats. The 6th student right would be any amount of people can sit at a lunch table at once. A lot of times people end up getting left out because of the seat number rule. The 7th student right could be 5 minute locker times. It is too hard to get from one place to a locker to another place in 2 minutes. The 8th right would be choosing what gym activities to do. Sometimes the games aren't fun. The 9th right would be if you get a bad grade on a quiz or test you have the ability to retake it. Sometimes a bad grade could really hurt your grade so I think it would be fair to do retakes. The 10th and final right for Jockey Hollow should be no bullying. Personally, I don't get bullied but I think some people do. If you are being forced to go to school let it at least be a bully free zone.

1. All students respect each other. The school would be a much nicer place and we wouldn't have to worry about kids being mean to each other.
2. We get no homework. It gives kids more free time for sports and extra circuler activities and gives them less things to worry about.
3. Students are allowed to listen to music during tests. Statistics have shown that listening to music increases grades because it more relaxed.
4. Gum chewing is allowed. Statistics also have shown that gum chewing creates a change in grades.
5. Assigned seats are not allowed. Kids should be trusted to sit and behave next to their friends. Assigned seats are only allowed if necessary but only for the people who are misbehaving.
6. All quizzes and tests are multiple choice. It can be hard for some kids to study and remember everything for assessments. Having multiple choice will at least give them a 50/50 chance of getting the answer right.
7. Students are always rewarded for doing good things. Rewards motivate kids to pick the better choice.
8. No students get grades below a C. Some kids aren't as smart as everyone else and this would keep kids from failing if theyre having trouble.
9. For every project you get to pick to do it individually or in partners. Sometimes you might not get the topic and would need some help from other people and this way you can share ideas that would further help you with that certain topic.
10. Every kid is provided with a laptop when joining a school system (government pays). Poorer families would then be covered with the BYOT that is required for school.

Sam Gertner Period 1
Amendment 1- Students have the right to question the teacher's explanations and lessons. You are allowed to disagree with the teacher.
I chose this because I think teachers have too much authority and students should be able to state how they feel.
Amendment 2- Students may use the bathroom whenever they want.
I chose this because you can't control when you have to use the bathroom. If you have to use the bathroom, you should have the right to do so.
Amendment 3- All of your homework will be assigned at the beginning of the week.
Some nights students are busy, and some nights they are free. You should be able to do all of your homework on free nights so you don't have to when you are busy.
Amendment 4- Half of the student's classes should be outside.
Students need fresh air so they can focus better.
Amendment 5- Bullying results in expulsion.
We don't need bullies in our school so they should be expelled.
Amendment 6- Students get an increase in electives.
Students should be able to select more classes that they want to take.
Amendment 7- Students can retake assignments they fail.
No one is perfect. That is why students should be able to retake things they fail.
Amendment 8- Students create the curriculum.
Many students don't like the topics covered in the curriculum. That is why they should create it.
Amendment 9- Students may have lunch whenever they want.
Students get hungry at different times. That is why they should eat whenever they want.
Amendment 10- Students aren't required to answer questions in class.
Some students don't like answering questions so they shouldn't have to.

1. To be able to choose when you have rotation and gym
Because some friends are split up and to be able to choose to see them during gym would be fun
2. Be able to listen to music during class (as long as it isn't disruptive)
For some students, listening to music helps them focus
3. Chew gum during class
Chewing gum while studying and chewing the same flavor while taking the test is proven to help you remember what you studied
4. Allow everyone one period once a week at least (besides study hall to be able to do homework
A lot of kids have after school activities which may interfere with the way students do their homework (rushing) so a free period to do it in school would help
5. Choose gym topics (vote)
It's more fun to choose what topics you do and out of order so when majority wins, you do that topic and the next few classes after that topic, will be a different majority
6. Picking groups when doing group work
There are times when people are put in groups with people who don't work and people they normally wouldn't pick to work with
7. Having phones out in class (appropriate)
Some people use their phones for research
8. Choose who you sit with
Back to people who don't work they might copy off you, you'd normally pick someone who wouldn't
9. Study hall in the library
This helps people focus; it's quiet, and there are books and computers for research
10. Air conditioners in each classroom
Students should have the opportunity to have AC in each classroom because in the summer it can get very hot in most classrooms

The right to start and run a club ,of any kind, with adult permission.

1. All students should be able to choose where they sit.
1. This is because of the fact that the students will work better if they're in a calm environment near their friends.

2. Homework should be limited to one piece a week and students should have more time to work on it.
2. Many students have after school activities and may not be able to finish it in the time given, this will reduce their stress levels.

3. Students should be able to listen to music while they work.
3. Doing this will allow the kids to relax while they work and think clearly, it may help to raise the grades of some students.

4. Activities should be done online.
4. Kids of this generation interact more with technology and will connect more with online work.

5. Group work should be done more often.
5. Being able to work with classmates will help the spread of ideas and allows kids to form rationships with others.

6. Longer lunch periods are needed.
6. Some kids buy lunch and are at the end of the line. Sometimes they don't get to finish their lunch and throw it away because they are out of time.

7. Classes should be shorter with longer passing times.
7. Many times when kids have to rush from one end of the school to the other, they're late because they can't get to their locker in time.

8. Lockers should be opened with a key, not a lock.
8. Lockers are hard to open for some kids, using keys will solve that problem and make lockers quicker and easier to open.

9. Snack should be provided throughout the day.
9. Some kids get hungry after lunch since the 8th grade has it so early, providing snacks will fix that so kids can focus more.

10. Students should choose what book they read.
10. Many of my classmates are unhappy that they are forcing us to read a non-fiction book, being able to read what we want will make the students much happier at kids time.

I believe that the students should have the right to have an optional amount of homework. Mainly because many people have extracurricular activities that sometimes require us to train late. Thus, making students unable to complete their homework in the little amount of time they have. I also think that students should have the capability to make decisions in terms of their project format. Although, this statement applies with some projects it does not apply to all. This, would be easier for people with speech problems because they often struggle with oral presentations. To continue I strongly feel that bullying should try to be better prevented. Many people are unaware of the effects of bullying for the person who is receiving the rude comments. No one should suffer throughout the school year. So, to make the students feel safe in their school envoirment any form of bullying should be dealt with immediately. No matter how mild it many seem to the principle of the school. Over more, we should form a system of transportation in the hallways to prevent injury. As every former school attendee knows the hallways can be a chaotic and dangerous place. Lastly, we need bigger stairs, wider lockers, lighter doors, no vandalism and bells to signal the ending of passing time. These would greatly benefit the students with their organization and can stop violent conduct as well as on going tardiness infractions. Lighter doors would serve us well in emergency situation were people would have to file out of the classroom, in the event of a fire drill. It is clear, that these would be important changes that may should considered in the future.

1. Students should be able to chew gum because it helps them focus and re-leaves stress.
2. Nicer teachers, its not that I don't like my teachers its just that having even nicer ones will be better.
3. A less strict dress code. In the summer you can take of only so many layers but in the winter you can keep adding layers, and in summer its hot and we wanna cool off.
4.Better tasting food in the cafeteria. I'll eat only some foods that they make and others are just nasty.
5. Cheaper food and snacks at lunch. I mean the number 4 kind of explains this too why pay so much for food you my not like.
6. A cleaner school. The school is clean but not very clean, its just crawling with bacteria and germs.
7.Shorter school days, school shouldn't be that long.
8. School starting later in the day, like really we need to SLEEP! and were really tired in the morning.
9.Shorter class time. Pretty self explanatory.
10. More time at the end of the day because I can never make it to my locker on the other side of the school because people crowed the hallways just talking and taking up to much space.

1. Speech of students will not be withheld unless it includes profanities, violence, or degrading.
This means that the right to speak out against something in school will not be withheld unless profanities and/or violence is used.
2. The privilege of fashion will not be restrained unless 6 teachers in a grade vote yes upon it.
This says that students can wear anything they want unless six teachers from a person's grade vote for that to be taken away from that person.
3. Fresh food and not anything frozen or premade is to be served for lunch.
This basically says that the lunches served to the students can't be reheated meals or anything not made at that location.
4. After physical education there should be a period of time where participants are allowed to shower and change.
What this means is that after gym class there should be some time for people to take a shower so they aren't as sweaty.
5. Any beverage is acceptable into class as long as it is not alcohol and spilled by the person drinking it. If so this privilege is taken away for a short period of time.
This means that any beverage except alcohol is allowed into class. If it is spilled by the person drinking it is taken away for a short period of time
6. Cell phones are allowed to be carried around with students as long as they are not misusing it. The use is only permitted in class when a teacher explicitly says so.
This means that students are allowed to carry their cell phones on them as long they are not using it for the wrong reasons and they only use it in class when directed.
7. Physical Education units should be determined by the number of votes from students each one gets.
This says that the units in gym class are determined on how many votes they get.
8. Students can choose not to do a project when given to them but they must supply a alternative accepted by the teacher.
This says that if students don't want to do a project they don't have to but they have to come up with an alternate project to make up for it.
9. When teachers are out there should be a study hall with a substitute teacher.
This is so if the substitute teacher is not an expert on the subject they're given then it isn't a problem.
10. There should be assigned Physical Education lockers for 8th graders so clothes can be placed in it in advance.
This means that there should be gym lockers for 8th graders so we wouldn't forget our clothes. Only 8th graders have this privilege because if everyone else did there would be to many lockers.

10. To sit anywhere in class.
-some people prefer different seats in the room.

If Jockey Hollow had a bill of rights it would have amendments like free appropriate speech as well as free appropriate clothing. Every one has their opinions and school uniforms isn't that necessary. Another amendment should be the approval but for school reasons. The other amendments would be similar. There would be menu freedoms as long as its appropriate.

10. If one is mean to a peer there will be a suspension in place.

I think this because there are a lot of injured people who have been bullied

9.No homework at all.

I think this because home is a place where kids can relax and not worry about things like homework.

8. There should be a bell installed in each class room.

I think this because i have a lot of lates because i am rushing to class because teachers are letting us out late.

7.The food should be healthier.

I think this because some people like to over eat sometimes but if they do they are eating healthier.

6.Lunch shouldn't be between 10:50-11:45 in the morning.

I think this because we get more hungry and crave junk food.

5. Freedom of speech shouldn't be allowed unless it's for a debate.

I think this because words hurt.

4. Kids8 should be everyday.

I think this because it gives kids a chance to relax and teachers time to prep for the next day.

3. If teachers give homework it shouldn't be mandatory.

I think this because i kids want to relax.

2. Gym shouldn't be mandatory.

I think this because not all kids like physical sports.

1. Gum should be allowed unless in gym or chorus.

I think this because studies have shown that if you chew gum you focus.

Students should have the right to establish any after school clubs or activities (within reason)
Explanation: Many students have interests that are not present at some of the after school activities now.
Students should have the right to create flyers or banners on any opinions they believe in.
Explanation: According to the first amendment freedom of press is a right all Americans should have but is not demonstrated in school.
Students should have the right to not participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Explanation: Forcing a student to stand up and participate in any exercise is violating their first amendment. Also there is a point where you have to say “under God,” and some students do not believe in a god.
Students should not have to read or study anything that he/she has already learned about.
Explanation: There is no point of relearning topics that you already know about because it is a waste of time where you can be learning about other topics.
Student should not have to memorize definitions/information.
Explanation: Student will most likely forget this information if not important after completing the test.
All students should have the right to know about quizzes/test at least a week before they occur.
Explanation: This gives students a reasonable amount to study for their test/quiz if they have engagements after school. This also bans pop-quizzes
No specific amount of time should be put on any assignment.
Explanation: Teachers always say that all students work at different paces yet they put time restrictions on tests and class work which is not fair at all.
Students should be able to eat at any time.
Explanation: Students only have one point in the day to eat when at home they can eat whenever they are hungry so it should be the same at school.
Students should have the right to carry their phone around with them in school.
Explanation: That way student can contact their parents and use it in educational ways such as a calculator, to read, dictionary etc.
Student should be able to express themselves through clothing or hair.
Explanation: In Jockey Hollow School dying your hair unnatural colors and wearing certain clothing is not allowed but the first amendment says that you have the freedom of expression.

Amendment 1#
Students should be able to have a freedom of speech. If the students can't speak out about what the teachers are doing wrong than they still won't be able to learn it.
Amendment 2#
Students have the right to have snacks in class. People get hungry and will be anticipating lunch more so they don't do well in class.
Amendment 3#
Students have the right to keep their cell phones on them as long as they do not use it in class without permission. That way in the case of a fire the students can contact their parents and tell them they are all right.
Amendment 4#
Students have the right to have locker privacy. That way students can have privacy in school and will feel comfortable.
Amendment 5#
Students cannot be punished for the same infraction or bad grade twice. It's unfair to be in trouble multiple times for something that already happened.
Amendment 6#
Students have the right to a speedy trial for his/her infraction. Suspense is hard on people's body and mind.
Amendment 7#
Students have the right to a free lunch if there is no money on their account. Students can concentrate in class if they are not hungry.
Amendment 8#
Students cannot be charged more money per lunch than others. Equal rights are important.
Amendment 9#
The rights of the students are not limited to the student bill of rights. It would take too long to list them all out or read.
Amendment 10#
The principal is not the overall controller the power is distributed between the Board of Ed., the principal, the teachers, and the students of Jockey Hollow Middle School. That way every problem doesn't have to be solved by the Board of ED.

1. I believe every classroom in Jockey Hollow should have the right to have a working bell in the building so that staff and students can keep track of time and issues with being late would be decreased.

2. I believe every student that attends Jockey Hollow should have the right to optional to no homework as with all the extra curricular activities students do they might not have time for the homework and therefore might get bad grades on something they already know. I believe homework should be optional as, since it's a way to help students practice what they learned on campus; if the student wants to practice for the subject they're learning, it should be their choice.

3. I believe every student should have the right to have a free period every day during school hours. Like study hall and kid time but not just for reading but for. Doing things such as homework, people in study hall might already do their homework but the students who take part in band, strings, or chorus don't get a free period to do that.

4. Students should have the right to freely use their cell phones for research and technology uses. This way, students that don't have laptops or iPads would have access to technology and wouldn't have to borrow some. Also, if fear of the students not listening and not going on the right stuff, then that's the students choice to not learn; it's his/her education.

5. I believe all students should have the right to pick the sport they want to play everyday. They will be able to learn the sport they choose but limit it to about 5 sports so they're not confined to one sport they won't participate in. This way students will get more physical excersise if they are more into the sport they are playing.

6. In the musical curriculum all instruments should be allowed and taught within the bands and string classes, such as guitar, ukulele, and more piano. These instruments are the main focus or wanting of people to learn and know how to play, so why not have more of the chance in our schools.

7. All students and staff have the right to chew gum in school. It is scientifically proven that chewing gum can increase test scores among students and some chew it anyway and waste so much money throwing pack after pack away.

8. All students should have the right and the freedom to be where they'd like in the cafeteria. Even though we have picked a spot to sit down and eat lunch we should be allowed to get up and switch tables to go talk to somebody as we not only see this as an eating period but a free, social one.

9. Students should have the right to order food from the cafeteria (say in the morning so it doesn't take long) and have it ready for them at lunch; there'd be a wide variety of food like at any restaurant. This way, for some students who might not eat or throw away half their meals they'll be able to enjoy lunch and get the nutrition they need.

10. There should not be penalties of being late or tardy for class. As long as the teacher knows where you are you should be allowed to be in t he halls as long as you'd like until you go to class. This way students won't be rushed, running, and falling over each other or on the stairs to get to each class; also this way we won't have to worry about forgetting what we need in class and be well prepared.

If I were to make a bill of rights for jockey hollow it would include:

1. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

I would choose this because there would be more people respecting others.

2. Have no homework.

This is important so we would have more time to do activities after school and home work can be stressful.

3. There will be less tests and quizzes.

It's a lot of stress having to study.

4. Let us choose what classes we would like to take.

So we could focus on our favorite subjects.

5. Make our own schedule.

So we can be with our friends and have our classes at certain times.

6. To be allowed to chew gum in class.

I think that it helps people focus sometimes.

7. We have the right to sit where we want to in class.

Sometimes its nice to sit next to people you feel comfortable with and know.

8. We choose who we work with.

Its nice being with people who you know and are friends with.

9. Everyone talks nice to each other.

So know ones feelings would be hurt.

10. You don't have to go up to the board if you didn't want to.

Sometimes its embarrassing if you don't know the answer.

Students shall have the right to no more than an hour's worth of homework each night. They need free time to do non-school related activities. Every students shall have the right to freedom of speech so they can stand up against rules they don't agree with. Every learner should have one free period a day like study hall to do homework, play, or relax. Everyone in the school can chew gum as long as they are responsible with it when they are done so students can quench their hunger before lunch. Students shouldn't detention without 3/4 teachers believing they should so some students don't get unfair detentions. All students shall be able to play videogames on their device if they are done with the assignment so they're not bored in class. Everyone can bring any drink along with them to their classes to quench their thirst. Everyone shall get one free lunch a marking period if they forget their lunch so they don't starve. Everyone can get one free day off in a marking period to relax. All students get the right to watch the school plays in school to have fun.

Students should be allowed to chew gum during class. This has been proven to make kids think better.
Students should have the freedom of speech and be able to stand up for themselves without a teacher saying that there talking back to them. A lot of kids will try and stand up for themselves when they get in trouble for no reason and teachers sometimes say that there talking back when were just trying to stick up for ourselves.
Have the dress code be more lenient. A lot of girls get in trouble for things that are just regular clothes but there definatly are reasons to a dress code.
Students shouldn't be forced to share things in from of the class if they dont want to. Yes, talking is very important but a lot of kids change what they write because they know there gonna have to share it.
In the spring students should be put in cooler rooms because its hard to learn when its really hot
Students should be allowed more time for changing in gym
Rewards for kids who answer questions will make the kids participate more
We should be allowed to sit 2 extra people at the big lunch tables because other wise we might be leaving people out

1. Freedom of speech in a respectful way- we should have the freedom to say what we want but it should be in a way that doesn't hurt others.

2. No weapons in school- weapons should not be allowed and were never allowed in school.

3. If someone stole something from a student (like a pencil) and gets caught, he or she can explain why.

4. Disruptive kids in the classroom will have two warnings- if a student is being disruptive he should get two warnings for getting in trouble or a lunch detention.

5. Students should have the right to express their school spirit- during spirit week, a student is allowed to wear face paint and other fun things.

6. The right to think of a reasonable and lower price for the lunch you are buying- the lunches in the cafeteria can get pretty high so the student should think of a price that fits both the schools and students needs.

7. Bullies will not be prohibited- a student has the right to tell anyone if they are being bullied.

8. A student has the right to pick one additional free drink at lunch if they want to.

9. Only one test- only one test can be on that day, not two or more, so the student has a little bit of a break.

10. The student should have free trail to the office to explain rather than getting in trouble without an explanation.

10 rights that I feel students at Jockey Hollow should have are:

1. Students of Jockey Hollow should not bully others because it is not right and no one deserves it.

2. Students are not allowed to swear at students and/or teachers and if you do then your consequence will correspond with how bad the swear was.

3. Yelling and/or screaming will not be tolerated.

4. Back talking teachers will conclude in a consequence.

5. Skipping class with result in a detention.

6. Students must read at least 3 books throughout the entire school year, so it's fair for everyone.

7. Running in the halls will result in a lunch detention.

8. Vandalizing school properties will earn a suspension.

If we had a Bill of Rights for Jockey Hollow here are some of the rules that would be on it.
-No Bullying
-Every student can have their own opinion
-Teachers can not make fun of students
-No Running in halls
-No misbehavior

These are some of the basic rules that would be on our "Bill of Rights". These are simple rules that I think follow our Lions Pride, Respect, Responsibility, Safety. I think that these kind of are our "Bill of Rights" in a way. We follow these sayings to keep everybody safe and that is pretty much what the Bill of Rights does.

My first Amendment would be That we could wear what we want because everyone should be able to express themselves in their own style.I would also make an amendment that would let us have freedom of speech because everyone should be able to say what the want. And that we can carry our phones around because during an emergency they can be important. Also that we have no homework on Fridays because everyone has their own things to do on Friday. And that we should be able to pick our own classes because we should learn about something we want to learn about. Also we should be able to have nap time if we choose because we need rest. Also we should be able to start our own clubs/groups if we want. And that we get to choose our teachers because we should all be comfortable with our teachers and want to learn from them. Also that we get to protest against bullying because it is something we need to stop. Also that we have more sports because there are tons of sports that we don't have at Jokey Hollow.

every student has the option to know what he has done wrong. This way everyone knows what they did. Anything that is consider crazy to that person and parent can be held for the student conile to diceid. Everyone has the point to talk and express them selves even if they want to wear hats, etc. This way student can feel free to express them selves. If ever caught with drugs or achaol they are to face extreme punishment and at least expulsion for that year. This way student will think twice on doing it.Also it is a required for student to learn about these dangers for 5 percent of the school year so they know want will happen if you do take them. Bullying should also be a huge offense and be trailed on and if found guilty be punished.
