BLOG 9: BILL OF RIGHTS

In class we have started to talk of a "Bill of Rights" during the ratification of the United States Constitution. The Anti-Federalist believed it was important to include a Bill of Rights in the new U.S. Constitution.

One of the most precious "right" Americans have is found under the First Amendment, Americans have the right to "free speech." However, do you feel that "free speech" can go too far? Should the government limit what we can or can not say? What do you think?

I feel like the Government should be able to limit free speech, to an extent. I think that some things people say are offensive and when someone tells them it was mean, they use the excuse "I have a right to freedom of speech" So, what I mean by this, is that people use it as an excuse when they say something rude and offensive.

I do think freedom of speech has gone too far but I don't think the government should limit what people can say. I think it would be a pointless law because there are over 300 million people in this country so the can not monitor what everyone says. I think people just need to think before they speak.

I think sometimes free speech can go too far. People can take their given liberties too far for example expressing what they think of others to a degree it can be viewed as offensive . There are points free speech is not applicable such as in court the judge is allowed to criticize as much as wanted although you do not have the authority to say what you want and are limited to what you can say. I also personally view voting as a way to express your liberty of free speech although they say you have to be 18 to express yourself.

no i dont think that the government can limit what you can say because its your opinion and its not like it can go to far because all it is just talking.

I think that the government should not limit our freedom of speech. Some people can go to far but they are speaking for what they believe in and they should be allowed to. If there wasn't freedom of speech then the citizens wouldn't have as much of a say in the government and the government could be making a mistake and since the citizens don't have freedom of speech they can't warn the government of the mistake they are making or help them fix the issue.

The fact that the bill of rights allows us to have free speech is something that can be both good and bad. Sometimes the people of the USA do go a bit far with the fact that they can speak their minds. I do think that they should limit what people say just because some of the things they say can be unnecessary and rude.

Yes, I think that freedom of speech can go too far because someone will say a really bad thing to say someone in our government and they will have that right through freedom of speech.I think the government should limit what we can say but not take away all of our thoughts.

In some cases, yes freedom of speech can go too far. For example, if someone says a rant about rebelling against the U.S. with the use of violence, that can be an act of terrorism. A good compromise of this situation would, instead of the using violence, use only words that will work in your favor without hurting people.

Yes, because you don't want to give the people to much power or else it will turn to an anarchy. Also you don't want to give the government to much power or else it could go to a dictatorship. So as long as we do have freedom of speech but know that we shouldn't do certain acts most people will be happy with good representation.

No, the government shouldn't control what we say. We should be able to say what we feel. Even when we discuss the government, we should be able to do so freely...and respectfully. Free speech is the first amendment of the constitution for a reason.

I think that if you say that people might think that they will have more power then the actual government itself. Also with a freedom of speech you will get too many fights with other citizens over what's right and what's not. Everyone is going to think that they have so much freedom that they can overpower over anything that they want even the most powerful thing such as the government

Sometimes the Americans right to free speech could go too far, with people saying really rude and offensive things but it's to be expected. No matter what people could say I believe that the government does not have the right to silence people or their freedom of speech. Telling someone, like a New Yorker, that they are not able to say things and it could be anything, they'll get angry.

I do believe that everyone should have their own freedom of speech, but I also do believe that we shouldn't have that much freedom of speech This is because if an adult says something to another adult then the younger kids such as me may interpret things differently than what the adults say. The kids might tell their parents abut what they heard. The parents might do something like speak to that person with their freedom of speech. What the parents don't know is that the kid is just younger than the more educated adult so the adult uses higher vocabulary that the kid might not understand. Also, freedom of speech is a little bad because if you're in a fight with someone, you can use whatever words that you want to say. The words might hurt the other persons feelings if you go too far with it. Overall, I'm agreeing that we should have limited "free speech."

I do believe that free speech can go too far. I think Americans have the right to share their views about the government. I feel that is something we earned after defeating Britain. However, when we start to disrespect the government, free speech can be taken too far. We have to remember that the government is in authority over us so we should respect them- like it or not. For these reasons, I think the government should limit what we can say. We should be able to say whatever we want, as long as it doesn't become disrespectful.

i think it depends on the situation.Yes and no free speech is free speech. in situation like debates people can say whatever is on their mind according to the circumstance they are in , but, if they are in like a school and someone decides to say whatever they want about whoever they want, then there will be a total disaster. Sometimes things need to be limited for a reason and sometimes it doesn't have to when it is necessary.

I agree that free-speech can go too far. It can affect the happiness and security of others. This though, is against the rules. Although, I do think that freedom of speech can be a good thing. It lets people speak their mind. It makes it more fair and less like a dictatorship where they have no voice. However, sometimes I think it can be overused.

I belive that free of speech can go to a sertan degree like if you have to get a shot to cure yourself you can't say no or you will die but if it's something simple like what do you want pizza or chicken you will be able to say what you want to say so free of speech can go to s sertan degree. But over all not all free of speech will let you say you will want to say.

To an extent, we should have a limit on what we can and cannot say. I do believe in the First Amendment's right to "free speech," to some standards. It's good to speak your mind and have your say in your opinion, however, some things shouldn't be said. An example of this is debates on religion. Everyone should be able to believe in what they choose without having to be criticized or judged upon it. People should've fight over it as you are more likely offending this person's beliefs, which I say, isn't "right". Besides religion and political views, some language citizens say to each other I find not acceptable. People say very degrading and terrible things to others, without asking for their opinion. It is very hurtful and, if not taken seriously, can become a repetitive action. This would lead the person into a form of depression and cause hurt to their mental health. There are many points of view and topics you can relate the "free speech" "right" to. In conclusion, yes I do believe, to an extent, that "free speech" can go too far and the government should limit some things of what we can and cannot say.

Free speech could definitely go too far. Freedom of speech is not classified as getting away with offensive terms, giving opinions to someone who is not willing to hear it, etc. Freedom of speech is when you can have opinions, and speak of them to someone who is actually in favor and willing to receive it. The government should have restrictions about what we say in everyday life, politics, and public speaking. Restrictions like this should be put into effect in order save people from using words and offensive opinions that can cause them receive consequences.

I think freedom of speech can go too far when you infringe on the rights of others, take for example yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. When you yell fire you are infringing on the rights of others by causing panic which can hurt people when there is no fire. Or like the press can't publish current of future military actions because in infringes on the rights of the solders by putting them in danger, However they can publish military actions after the action is over. I think people can say anything as long as it isn't infringing on others rights.

I think people do have a right to say what they feel, to certain extent. If someone trash talks the government and starts to manipulate people to think that this is right but its not, then a rebellion will start and there will be chaos. However, if you feel that the government has done something wrong and people agree with you then you should be able to speak your mind. Freedom is very important that's why we have to make sure people don't abuse it.

I believe that completely free speech goes too far because it can go in opposition to or conflict with other constitutional rights, for instance a violation of civil liberties like racial slurs. It would be nearly impossible to regulate all speach, like in a private house, but the government could fine for public useage of language that violates other constitutional rights.

I believe the right of free speech can never go too far. If someone believes differently to a law or part of government they have the right to speak out about it. The government cannot restrain our actions or words. They can even bring some attention to what should be done! People could abuse their freedom of speech but that doesn't mean that it should be taken away from everyone else as well. We are people just like everyone else is. We deserve what we already have.

I believe that when it comes to free speech there should be no limit. We should be able to say whatever we want to say. Because as Americans we should be able to have the freedom of speech because it expresses how we feel and react to things. And who we really are as people.

I believe that the right to have freedom of speech is okay but only to a certain extent. I believe that there should be a limit to what we can say, as some of it may be hurtful or compromising to to others. I believe that this basic right is only found to be true in some situations and it is slightly overrated.

Yes, I think the government should limit our speech. This way, we don't go into riots or huge protests, even trying to over throw the government because we got mad at something they said. Also, the language could be offensive to other people and would cause them to get angry, too. Eventually, the country would fall into chaos and anarchy.

I think free speech should be limited to a person. I think this because some things people can say can be rude or hurtful to others. But because of under the first Amendment, that person has the right to say that rude or hurtful statement.Free speech gives anyone the freedom to say what they want, but may not always be nice, thus leading to verbal bullying. This is why I think free speech should be limited.

I believe that the first amendment, freedom of speech can go too far. There are many instances where it is taken to extremes and used in hateful and insensitive manners. For example, the KKK have offensive views on people, but they are allowed to express it due to this amendment. Another occasion where we take this for granted is when people swear infront of children, this is not okay because it puts a bad influence on them, but again, it is allowed due to this right. Also when people yell out things in public building like "Fire!" it not only puts people in danger but abuses this right. Although, there are many times where free speech is a good thing, but the government should control it, so people do not use it in the wrong way. Michelle A. Period 1

From my point of view Free speech cant go too far. Free speech is the right to express your beliefs and opinions freely to other people. I believe that whatever people think is right, should be expressed to the public, no matter how harsh. But not too harsh, which means calling people inappropriate names or addressing threats to people.

I think that sometimes people tale free of speech to far because when it comes to voting we say things that we shouldn't like " Obama stinks," people get offensive and that is how bad things start. I think that we should watch what we say when it comes to everything we do in life. I think that they should not make a law because not to many people are bad with things like that, and if it ever does then we can make a law.

I think the government should limit our right to free speech. People should not have the right to talk poorly of or disrespect our government. They should only be allowed to express their opinions about the matters on their voting ballet to change what they don't like. Therefore we should have limitations on what we can say in our democracy.

Yes, I believe that freedom of speech can go to far. I do believe that the government should be able to limit the things your allowed to say. For example, if your in a public place like a mall or movie theater, and someone yells "he has a gun" then you should be yelled at or punished because that is putting peoples safety in harms way. If everyone is rushing to leave, then everyone could start fight or pushing to get out. It might have meant to be a joke, but it put people in harms way and thats not something the government should allow.

I think this can go two ways; one being that the right of "free speech" is totally fair and nobody can make you talk if you do not want to, I get that. On the other hand, some may argue that this is not fair and that you can not choose to not say a word, you HAVE to talk. What do I think? I believe that you only HAVE to talk when you are suspected for a crime lets say. If you are very suspicious and you won't say a word, its difficult to get information which I don't think is fair. Other than that type of stuff, nobody should be forced to talk in my opinion.

What i think influenced the United State's Constitution is the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. I think this because there were rules like "taxes couldn't be raised without the consent of the people." Also "the head of government had to follow the laws." And finally "Elections had to be held frequently." This is what i think helped structure the constitution.
