Last week I talked to my Great uncle Anthony about my Great Grandfather and his journey to America. While we talked I discussed with him what it was like during world war 2. He did not fight because a few years before, he got hit by a car and almost had his leg amputated. Because of this injury, he was unable to fight. He told me what is was like at home. He said that at night they weren't aloud to leave lights on because of the possibility of an Arial attack. He listened to the radio and read the news papers frequently to hear about what was going on during the war. He said he had a friend that was killed, his naval ship was sunk by a German U boat. He remembers the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and how devastating it was for the Japanese.

During the week, my Grandpa and I talked about this topic. I have no one in my family who is alive to talk about this with. But My Grandpa remembers the Japanese bombing Perl Harbor. When he and his family found out about this they were very upset because they realized that they were at war with not only Japan but Germany too. They were also very upset with the fact that so many people were killed during the bombing. He remembers Franklin Roosevelt declaring war with Germany and Japan. He also remembers that he was a little worried. He remembers that the President mobilized the country by making all these weapons and drafting a ton people. He finally remembers Jimmy Doolittle lead a squadron of bombers from a US aircraft Carrier. It was a very short time after Japan bombed Perl Harbor. It was in retaliation for bombing Perl Harbor.

My mom didn't know much about what my family on my mom's side did during WWII, she did know that my great grandpa was rejected and unable to fight in the war. She doesn't know why. My great grandma worked in a factory for Remington Arms. My other great grandma on my mom's side also worked in a factory, but my mom doesn't know the name. My other great grandpa on my mom's side was in the Navy.

My paternal grandfather served in World War II. He was eighteen years old when he fought in it. He did not see any combat, but he was sent to the Philippines by the army. He was in training most of the time. But he was not immersed in combat of any kind.

My mother's mother's father, Franklin Stamm, was vice president of the company U.S. Steel. U.S. Steel was founded in 1901 and in 1943 had 340,000 employees. He managed factories that produced steel for battleships and carriers for the U.S. Navy. The best man at his wedding was killed on the USS Shaw during Pearl Harbor. My mother's father's father was a soldier based in Washington D.C. He was a lawyer and worked for the Navy in the war department.

For this blog, I spoke with my grandma about her parents, and their experience during war time. Both of her parents were working at Remington Arms making ammunition for the wartime effort. This was important for the homefront because they contributed to providing the bullets for the soldiers. My grandma's father was working in the factory as a way to help, because he was not fighting in the war. At the time, you would not be drafted in the war if you had a certain amount of children. This shows that even though my grandma's parents weren't fighting, they still were a part of providing for the soldiers.

My grandparents told me that they were three and six years old, living in Long Island, New York. My grandfather remembers German saboteurs landing on a beach on Long Island from a submarine with explosives. They were soon captured. He also remembers that he had gas rationing and took turns driving and car pooling with neighbors. My grandma remembers the end of the war when she was 6 years old. There were celebratory parades and people would drive through main street and wave their flags and toot their horns. Her mother was also very relived because after the war she was finally to see if her relatives in Poland were safe and still alive, and they all were.

My great great uncle, Mike Rickson, was in World War II. He was in the army out in the Pacific, where he helped recover soldiers. He had been drafted into the war, his family didn't approve of it. He was mostly around Asia during his time in the war.

I asked my father about his knowledge of what happened to our family during world war II. He said my Great grandfather went off to fight. My grandfather was only a child at the time, but with their father gone his oldest brother was now the man of the house. He remembers having to help out more even though he was a young boy and had to taker care of his mother. His mother would get so worried with all the news of attacks in fear it may be her husband.

My great grandpa fought in WW11. He was a genral in the Navy and served from 1944-1946. He served in Guam and was trained in Green Bay. He didn't really have many interesting stories to tell but he did serve in combat. The main idea as other veterans might say is that the war was bloody and not something to be relived.

I had a great uncle, Fritz Hoefling who was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He recently died on March 24, 2015. He played the bugle call during the war to announce the important events. I could not find out anymore information about him.

My great uncle on my dads side fought in World War II in Europe against the German. My dad said that my great uncle hardly talked about his experience, but he did have a few medals. He even owned a Luger handgun that he stole from a German soldier during his time serving. He had once told my grandma that if mothers knew what their sons had to go through in war, they wouldn't have had children.

Yes, I did have a great grandparent who served in World War 2. His name was Frank Kelley, he was a Private First Class in the U.S Army. His job was to guard the ammunition at an Army base in Georgia. One day someone tried to break into the munitions store house and my great-grandfather caught him. When this man fled the scene he shot the runaway in the leg. In conclusion, this was the story my great-grandfather's service in World War 2.

My grandfather remembered when the Japanese bombed Purl Harbor he was eating dinner with his family and they heard on the radio that the Japanese had done a lot of damage to the ships. His father took him outside and started talking to him and telling him that his brother might have to go into the war and depending on how long the war lasted that he might have to go into the war as well. His father being to old to sign up went to Hawaii to help rebuild the Navel bases and the Army bases and the Air Force bases. My grandfather's father was a veteran of world war 1.

My great uncle Steve fought in World War II and fought in the battle of Iwojima. He was aboard one of the first battle ships to go into Tokyo. During the battle, he got wounded in action and received a Purple Heart. He got shot in the hand during battle. It wasn't a terrible wound, so he didn't need to get his hand amputated. He is still living today and is 96 years old.

I talked to my great uncle Andy about my great grandfather and his journey to America. My great grandfather fought in world war 2. But, my great uncle did not. My great uncle told me that at home he was very cautious every minute about his surroundings. My great grandfather said that it was a very scary war to be fighting in. But, he knew he had to do what was right and give it all he had. He said it was difficult and was very hard but he did it.

None of my family members fought in World War 2. They were not old enough to fight at the time. However, my great-grandfather was an air raid warden. Every night, it was his job to make sure all the black curtains were down in every house in his neighborhood, so planes flying over head wouldn't be able to see the lights in the houses. He thought it was a very depressing time, and that an air raid could happen at any minute so everyone was always worried.

Once when I was in Ohio visiting family members I was talking to my uncle Quin about world war 2. He went into an amazing story about his experience. He was a tank driver during the battle of the buldge. He explained how days in tanks were extremely hot and hard work changing the bullets and such. He was the main driver of the tank. I also have a book that has been hi lighted by my uncle I will bring in with more details about this.

When I began to talk about this topic with my grandfather he remembered everything that happened to him very vividly. My grandfather never fought in the war but something very monumental did happen to him. My grandfather was in Hawaii at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He does not remember why he was at Hawaii because of the trauma. He was on the exact island of Hawaii where the bombing mainly to place but luckily he was far enough away not to get hurt. However, even though he didn't get hurt he saw how much damage it had caused. He described the decapitated bodies he saw and the sinking navel ships he witnessed. He said, "I never forgot how that could have been me and how I was so close to death."

My Great Grandfather faught for Germany in WWII. His wife, his three children and cousins lived very close to where they made the aircrafts in Germany. His second child, Christl, my grandmother, was just about 8 years old when her house was bombed by the United States. Christl's mother, older brother, and younger sister ran to seek cover in the near by bomb shelter. Her aunt and uncle were outside of their house when they realised they left their children inside. They ran back in the house to get the children to safety when a bomb landed right on their house and they all died. Her father came home from combat shortly after and gave scared German men who were terrified to be forcefully drafted into the Nazi army his uniform so they could look like they are already enlisted in the army and escape being hung. A while after her father had to go back to combat and fight for Germany when he was lethally wounded in battle. He was sent to a hospital where he could say his final goodbyes to his family. Though she was adored by her father, she was disliked by her mother, Christl did not get to see her father until her older brother and younger sister, who was only 3 years old at the time, said goodbye. Her father was deranged by the time Christl got to see him and a nurse gave him a shot that killed him instantly. To this day no one knows why the nurse gave him that shot and why it killed him. My grandmother, Christl, or as I call her "Oma" because it means grandmother in German, tells many stories like this one about her and her family's experiences in Germany during WWII and likes to keep the memory of her father alive.

I don't have a living relative to talk to, but my Grandpa told me about his experience. He described to me how terrible the bombing of Pearl Harbor was, and how he was devastated when he found out the amount of lives lost and that we had declared war on Japan.
