BLOG 6: IGNORANT AND FREE?

One of America's most famous founding fathers Thomas Jefferson once said,

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."

What do you think he means  by this statement?

The quote that Thomas Jefferson meant that people need to not think that when they get freedom from the British. And they think freedom will have no rules like they have with the British. Also like saying all of the Americans need to go against ignorance and and have responsibility.

he means that they will be free but unknowing of what lies ahead in there civilization but what they start might never ever see the end of it," What never was and never will be." They need to know what to do with there freedom but they don't so they might not make it as a civilization. To sum it up, they have there freedom..... now what? We need a game plan to last as a civilization.

I think this means that everyone must know what it took to be 'ignorant and free' or civilization will never be the way it is/was supposed to be. Everyone should be educated on how civilization and freedom came to be, or it will vanish into something other than what it actually is.

I think that this quote means that Thomas Jefferson thinks that in order to be civilized and free then anyone involved with wanting freedom has to have knowledge and know what is happening, how it happens, and how to civilized. If people don't understand what is happening, how could you create freedom in the colonies.

i think what Thomas Jefferson meant by saying"if a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization" that you can just expect things to be one way even though it will never be like that because if you just hope for one thing and get it pin point exactly, and that their ignorance will keep them from achieving the freedom that they want to achieve and that the government can easily take back their freedom ???

What Thomas Jefferson means by this statement is that to become free you have to be mindful of what it takes to stay that way. Once someone becomes independent they sometimes make the mistake of thinking it will always stay that way. You have to be aware of the dangers threatening the country and threatening you. You have to be able to control your country but still give the independence the people deserve. You have to be mindful of all this to run a successful democracy.

From what Thomas Jefferson once said, "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be," I'm led to believe that Jefferson meant that you cannot create a nation with ignorance and freedom as you need knowledge and awareness to be able to do so. You cannot stand around and expect it to happen on it's own, you need to work for it; fight for it. With in which, our nation's citizens truly did as they taught each other methods of survival and fighting techniques that they took with them onto the battle field.

I think he means to not be ignorant and to live progressively and intelligently. They would have to be able to work with the community to make the country grow. In order to progress as a country and to be an active part of the world community, you have to stay educated and alert to the world around you.

I think one of America's most famous founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, meant by his quote was that a nation can't live and be not knowing of the world around them and expect to be free. The nation wants to become something better but it can't achieve to become it because they don't understand the problems around the world so the nation never was and will never be what it expected to be.

When Thomas Jefferson says, “"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be," he means now that our society is free, we need to keep it that way by setting up a government and give duties to each person. Freedom requires responsibility, and if people do not do their part in the government then it will fall, and America would then go back to what it was before. Thomas Jefferson is now urging everyone to action now that the war is over.

I think it means that a country can't be free for no reason they have to work hard to do it not just sit back and do nothing. In this case he is probably talking about America.

I think this statement means that if you really want to be free then you have to know what is going on around you, and therefore cannot be ignorant.

I think this statement means that if they are going to be uneducated and free, as a nation they shouldn't expect an good outcome from it.
