This excerpt made me feel like slavery was cruel, and inhumane all around. The man trying to but the slaves was talking about them like they were animals or an object which is unfair and probably hurtful to the slaves. He was saying how they had to separate a mother from her child and that is absolutely terrible. It says, “…when they carried off the child, and locked her up, she jest went ravin’ mad, and died in a week.” The only thing he says is that it was a waste of money, which is a terrible thing to think. – Victoria Yencik, Period 3.

Dear Meg,
The year is 1951 and Slavery just exploded, someone wrote a book about it actually. I found the book to be sad. The fact that someone could be put in such a miserable situation is terrifying. I would never wish that on anyone. The book reads, "Tom opened his eyes, and looked up upon his master... 'There an't no more ye can do!'" This makes it seem like this slave is not being treated fairly and should be very scared. I couldn't imagine myself in that situation. I hope that you could help me spread the word about this book, people deserve to know what is really going on.
Sincerely,
Amanda Flynn

Dear friend,

This excerpt made me feel sad. No one should have their child taken away from them just so some other man can use him for labor. Especially those who had a different skin color than white. Like the black lady in the excerpt who had her child taken away. A quote to show this is, " Fact is, I never could do things up the way some fellers manage business. I've seen'em as would pull a woman's child out of her arms, and set him up to sell, and she screechin' like mad all the time..." It's terrible that people let this happen and we should put a stop to it!

Dear Friend,
I have recently read the book Uncle Tom's Cabin. I was very disappointed on how people treat the poor slaves. There was a story on it on how a mother was separated from her baby because of slavery and it killed her a week later. It kills me to see these people be taken away from family. I think something needs to be done about this.

Dear Friend,

I already knew that slavery was an awful, disturbing problem in the U.S. many years ago, but it should have been banned long before it actually was. The image that Harriet Beecher Stowe but in my mind was actually very scary. " The fellow that was trading for her didn't want her baby...I tell you she squeezed up her child in her arms, and talked, and went on real awful...when they carried off her child, and locked her up, she just went ravin' mad, and died in a week" (Stowe, 493) These few sentences put a vivid image in your mind of a mother who went through way too many hardships to have her child and now it had to be taken away? It is also sad how they were just so inhumane to the level of which they would take a baby from a mothers arms and wonder why the mother was going ballistic. I hope you read this book!

Dear, Mr. Delvecchio

After reading the expert from Uncle Tom's I firmly disagree with slavery. In the expert Shelby is selling ha slaves to a a man named Mr. Haley for money. Also, Mr. Haley wants to buy Shelby, a slave owners, wife. Shelby is refusing to do so. I think that is right because you should not sell people for money. Including your wife or a young child. Which the slave trader wants so the boy can work as a waiter in a restaurant. Young children should not have a job that involves so much responsibility at such a young age.

Dear Friend,
I have just read a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. I'm sure you've heard about this book already since it has opened us Northerners up to how awful slavery actually is. I can't believe how cruel people can be. "That fellow that was trading for her didn't want her baby." I was shocked to see that humans could separate a mother and her child, it's not right to split up a family just because a rich man didn't feel like buying the child too. Imagine what he would feel like if he had a child taken from him. People don't realize that blacks have feelings, just like whites. We need to start thinking of them as people too.

Have you read the book Uncle Tom's Cabin it gives me the chills. I never knew slavery was this bad. People just take them away from their kids and family and get their freedom taken away! "I've seen'em as would pull a woman's child out of her arms, and set him up to sell..." How can some people be so inhumane as to just take someones child and put them up for sale. This salvery thing in the South is going to be a real problem.

Dear Pal,
I was reading up on the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. A fascinating book on slavery, and there were many terrible things going on to these peopler or so called slaves. Just reading this here book, made my blood boil. I recall a man in the story saying, " I've seen 'em as would pull a woman's child out of her arms, and set him up to sell, and she screechin' like mad all the time;- very bad policy- damages the article- makes 'em quite unfit for service sometimes." This was just awful but instead of sorrow I was mostly infuriated.

Dear Friend,
From reading an excerpt from Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it really opened my eyes as to how inhumane slavery is right now. The stories, the slave trader, Mr. Haley was telling were extremely cruel. “And when they carried off the child, and locked her up, she jest went ravin' mad, and died in a week.” This quote made me realize just brutal some of these slave traders are, the arguments and rivalries between the sections are now not only about the balance in Congress, but now slavery is being recognized as a human, immoral problem in America. It sickens me knowing that these people carried a woman’s child away and left her to die, selling off her child at an auction. Clearly not all slave traders are bad as these paragraphs tell us, considering even Mr. Haley found it severe. The fact that they use human beings as marketing techniques is sad. “Sell for waiters, and so on, to rich 'uns that can pay for handsome 'uns,” they view slaves as property and just a way to make more money. It made me happy to see that some slave owners treat their slaves as people like Shelby and his wife. He said that he would not sell the girl or the boy because he would not take them away from his parents, and his wife had taken a liking to the girl, saying that she would not leave her for her weight in gold. I’m just hoping that we do something to solve this issue, reunite the two sections, and stop some people from treating these human being like animals.

Dear Friend,

I just read a small part of, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” It made me think a lot about slavery. It is just wrong that people will have their children taken away from them to become a slave. There are always people trying to negotiate on trading slaves. An example of negotiations is showed in this quote. “‘Come, how will you trade about the gal?- what shall I say for her- what’ll you take?’ ‘Mr. Haley, she is not to be sold,’ said Shelby ‘My wife would not part with her for her weight in gold.’” You should read it if you have spare time.

Dear friend,
I have just read a small piece of the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, and it has given me a shocking new outlook on slavery. I have known about the wide argument slavery has caused and how many others want it to be banned throughout the entire country, but I have never thought of it as more than a political disagreement. The book has showed me just how horrible slavery actually is. There's this one part where a man is trying to convince another man to sell him a woman and possibly her child, "'Come, how will you trade about the gal?-what shall I say for her-what'll you take?' 'Mr. Haley, she is not to be sold,' said Shelby. 'My wife would not part with her for her weight in gold.' 'Ay,ay! women always say such things, cause they ha'nt no sort of calculation. Just show 'em how many watches feathers, and trinkets, one's weight in gold would buy, and that alters the case...'" Isn't that just terrible? I could never imagine being sold or even talking about selling someone else's freedom just for riches. I've found that this is much more than a political argument, it's an awful way to even consider treating fellow human beings.

Dear Friend,
after reading the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" I am in shock at the travesties that take place in our very own country. It is scary due to the fact this is going on in our "free" democracy where all men are supposedly created equal. I think we should protest these behaviors and help put a definitive stop the idea of slavery. This makes me feel even more opposed to slavery than I already was and is just tearing our country apart. We should join together to tell the southerners how we feel about their "property" usage and how they are human beings just like us.

Dear Friend,
This section of Uncle Toms Cabin made me feel deeply saddened because the plantation owners do not value these poor innocent people. They only see them as parts of their profits."These critter's ain't like white folks, you know; they gets things over, only manage right. Now they say," This shows that the slave trader does not think of them as individuals but rather animals that deserve to be restrained. Obviously this opinion is based off of the usage of the term "critters"." ...and when they when they carried off the child and locked her up, she jest went ravin' mad, and died in a week." Here it is shown that the concept of slavery is cruel because people can be separated from their families, never to return again. But, the slave traders show no empathy. It is clear, that slavery is wrong and unjust according to " Uncle Toms Cabin." by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Dear Kelly,
Have you ever read some of "Uncle Tom's Cabin"? It's about slavery, and I have just read a powerful excerpt of it. It made me question why slavery is still around. One part I read that made me think was, "Mr. Haley she is not to be sold' said Shelby. In that part, two people are talking about trading someone for gold. Shelby was a humane person and knew better than to sell a human. It was good to hear that some people had a right of mind, yet it makes me upset that we are still selling humans to other humans. Please look at this book, I think you'll like it.

Charles,

As you may have heard a woman named Harriet Stowe has come out with a book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. From my local friends that have already read the book I heard that it was exceptional and that I must read it. I finally gave in and read this book. Once I did it really opened my eyes to what slavery is really like. I saw how slaves were treated inhumane and we just stood around and watched. As it says in Uncle Tom’s Cabin “‘I’ve seen ‘em as would pull a woman’s child out of her arms, and set him up to sell, and she screechin’ like mad all the time;-very bad policy-damages the article...’” As you can see, Charles, they pull families apart because of slavery. They don’t even call these people humans. They call the slaves articles like clothing you can just throw out and buy new again. So Charles, as my dear cousin, I wrote this letter to show you how unjust slavery is. Since we are part of the Northern section of the United States of America, it is our duty to fight against the South and abolish slavery for the good of humanity.

Dear Person,
After reading this story, I started to understand just how bad slavery was. At first I disagreed with slavery, but I never had that much of a problem with it. Now, however, I think slavery is terrible and I am going to strongly support abolishing slavery instead of not caring. The fact that mothers get their children taken right out of their arms is just horrible. I knew that slave owners treat their slaves poorly but I didn't know it was this bad. The man in the story referred to a fellow human being as a critter. That is just disgusting. I am going to make sure that everyone I know reads this book so they can understand just how bad slavery is.

Dear Emily,

I was reading a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin and now I realize how slaves are treated. Slaves are separated from their families and homes and sold like they are not even people! They don't even get a say in who they are sold to or even if they want to get sold. In this story if found this quote very interesting, "Wants to buy up handsome boys to raise for the market." This is showing how people didn't care about the slaves or how they felt about being sold. I didn't like how in the book, the trader was trying to bribe the man to sell the girl and the boy. Luckily, the man stuck his ground and didn't sell the girl. He said, "My wife would not part with her for her weight in gold." Im glad that they were both thinking of the slaves before themselves. I really think you should read this book because it will show you whats going on and how some people are treated.

Hello Friend,

I have just been introduced to a new perspective on slavery due to a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. The slave and plantation owners are ruthless and do not care who they are buying. All these people are to them is property and they will stop at nothing to make their property greater and put them to work. "Well, you'll let me have the boy though, said the trader, you must own I've come down pretty handsomely for him." This shows that the people who are being bought are just things, not people and some people would actually buy a young boy and put him to work, which is awful. Slavery in every way outrages me and it is inhumane to be able to by and work a person, but let alone a child is even worse. Slavery is wrong and it needs to stop.

Dear Friend,

I had just recently read a bit of that new book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe and found it very revealing. It opened my perspective on slavery to new heights. For myself, being someone not involved or connected to slavery in any way, didn't really particularly care what the southerns did. However, now this has changed my mind and frankly, not for the better. I see how much slavery affects these pour people who they treat like they're animals, "'These critters ain't like white folks, you know; they gets over things, only manage right.'" What kind of right do these people think they have to call these people "critters"?! They're just as we are now; there's no need for this nonsense and labeling. I've also found their acts to be awful, cruel and a disgrace to our people. "'...when they carried off the child, and locked her up, she jest went ravin' mad, and died in a week.'" How in anyone's right mind can a person deprive a woman of her child; she has given birth to a miracle of life and they are withdrawing this from her; stealing this joy out of her very hands. I find this 100% humane and cannot bear to sit here and do nothing about it. Read this book too my friend, and join me in this civil rights act.

Dear friend,
I was reading uncle toms cabin and I was struck by the ironic prospective that Haley had. His prospective was that you could make slavery a extreamly inhumane thing more humane. "I'm a humane man, and I hate to take the boy away from his mother, sir." Haley is saying I'm a humane man wile he is talking about keeping people under his control for no payment to them. Even though he is trying to make a better experience for the slaves it is still completely offensive that he thinks he is humane.

Dear Caitlyn,
I had just read this book Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book has such an inspirational topic. It's all about slavery, how someone is trying to take someone away from their family and own them. This has become too far and we need to stop this. No one should be treated as a slave, it's not right. Also, everyone should get the right education. In the book Uncle Tom's Cabin it says, "I al'ays hates theseyer screechin', screemin' times." As you can see, their grammar is not that great. They say al'ays instead of always. If they had the right education then they would know how to spell simple words like these. At the end of the day, we need to find a way to stop slavery. Innocent people should not have to be a slave.

Dear Friend,
Recently I read an excerpt from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and it changed my views on slavery greatly. Slavery used to be no concern of mine and now that I have understanding of how we treat these slaves I am completely against it. It puts human beings (slaves) in the same category as inanimate objects that we decorate houses with. It says that although they are worth lots of gold, they are still not priceless, which every human should be. They should not be traded, sold, bought because of lack of energy in their owners. They are humans and if we are unhappy with the circumstances that require us to buy them, then, why would we expect them to enjoy it? "Ay, ay! Women always say such things, cause they ha'nt no sort of calculation. Just show 'em how many watches, feathers, and trinkets, one weight in gold would buy, and that alters the case, I reckon." These words are from a slave buyer who is trying to purchase a slave from a man whose wife doesn't want to. This man thinks a human can be sold with watches and gold and it is acceptable there but every time I think of it that way, it makes me angry. Slavery is not a subject to be taken lightly and I hope you agree with me after all this.

People selling other people like food, or jewlery, doesnt seem right. The man tried to take the woman or the boy "off the mans hands". "Ay,Ay woman always say such things, cause they ha'nt no sort of calculation. Its just wrong to do that to a person. I just wish there was a way for me to help them or to even put an end to slavery. Please write back.

This expert made me feel bad for the woman who had to give up their children or go without their children which was really sad because they shouldn't be taken away from their own kids. "I've seen 'em as would pull a woman's child out of her arms, and set him up to sell, and she screechin' like mad all the time:--very bad policy--damages the article--makes 'em quite unfit for service sometimes."

After reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, I realized that slavery is a cruel and bad thing in our country today. Slavery should be abolished after reading about what these southerners do to slaves. I feel like this a problem in our country and should be stopped immediately. Slavery is an awful way to make money, and by slave owners hurting their own slaves make it even worst.

Dear Buddy,

I am writing to you on an important topic. A just recently read a new book called, "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This book really made me think to myself and ask, How could somebody be put through thus pain by another human?" I can not imagine being in the shoes of a slave. I have a quote from the text myself; "Tom opened his eyes, and looked up upon his master... 'There an't no more ye can do!'"
As you can see clearly these poor slaves just don't get treated properly and it is very sad. You should read the book yourself. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

After reading this, this excerpt made me feel bad for African Americans back then and reminded me how little they were appreciated or cared for. Slavery was a cruel time using people who had a darker skin tone than yours forcing them to do work and trade them for money and the fact that you could take a slave child away for his/her family is just cruel.

Dear Friend,
After reading a book called, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" I have realized that slavery is a big issue, and how could an other human put an African American through a lot of pain just because of work and money? I just wanted to inform you about this big issue, and I hope I helped you to understand, and changed your mind about slavery. I hope to hear from you soon.

Dear bud,

Uncle Toms Cabin is about a person who wants to end slavery, also known as an abolitionist. They realize that slavery is a huge issue in the north and south, and now it is spreading. Unjust wanted to let you know about this story, so you would read it and find out why slavery should be a done deal.

Dear Friend,
I have just read the story of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and I can't help but feel outraged. "These critters ain't like white folk, you know..." They are people too, regardless of skin color. I feel like we should make a stand against the south, their way of treating slaves is terrible! Please write back soon.
